The Science and Technologies Council (STFC) has two commercialisation schemes which provide an opportunity to develop ideas science and technology towards commercialisation and the market for two communities, and the computing that underpins them:

  • the STFC PPAN (Particle Physics, Astronomy, Nuclear Physics) community
  • the STFC Quantum Physics, Particle Astrophysics, Accelerator and Space Science community

STFC requires 10 new panel members in these areas who also have experience of, or a strong knowledge of, industrial, commercial and market requirements.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for individuals at UK-based institutions or organisations who bring knowledge of commercialisation in different STFC areas, providing expertise in the science and a knowledge of scientific applications.

For the current recruitment round we are looking for panel members in all areas of STFC research.

A dynamic, diverse, and inclusive panel is critical to ensuring STFC get the best outcome from panels. Therefore, we particularly encourage applications from:

  • women
  • people who identify as an ethnic minority
  • people with a disability
  • other groups who are currently under-represented on the panel

What you’ll be doing

You will be asked to be a member of one of two panels:

  • the Early-Stage Research and Development Scheme Panel (Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 1 to 5)
  • the Late-Stage Commercialisation Scheme Panel (TRL 5 to 7)

The panel members will provide STFC with expert knowledge on the science, the business plan, review, assess and act as an introducer at a panel once a year for their chosen scheme.

The panel reviews and considers science, technology and commercialisation in submitted applications. This includes identifying strengths and weaknesses of the proposals, the scientific and commercial opportunities and understanding the underpinning technological development.

The panel:

  • reviews the proposals in a timely manner providing scores and written justification for the scores
  • maintains confidentiality regarding the proposals that are assessed and reviewed
  • attend pre-panel meetings up to twice a year
  • attend panel meetings once a year to create a ranked list which STFC can use for funding purposes
  • provide feedback on proposals that they have assessed which will be provided to the applicants

The members of both panels will be representative of STFC’s core research stakeholder communities. In addition, members of the Late-Stage Commercialisation Scheme Panel may be industrialists nominated to the panel by Innovate UK.

Our handbook for members of STFC’s advisory bodies will help you to understand our expectations of a panel member. The handbook also includes useful information on other topics, such as:

  • equality and diversity
  • conflicts of interest
  • confidentiality
  • our policy on travel, subsistence, and remunerated meeting fees

How to apply

Read the application guidance documents, which include:

  • a preview of the application form
  • questions and answers from a webinar we held in 2021
  • testimonies from members of STFC panels, boards and committees

Apply using the online form on the UKRI Engagement Hub.

How we’ll assess your application

Applications will be assessed by the STFC panel convenor and STFC Office staff against the following criteria:

  • relevant scientific or technical expertise, or both
  • an understanding of national and international PPAN science contexts

All applications will be assessed based on STFC panel recruitment guidelines.
