The chair of the BGS Board reports to and works closely with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Executive Chair.

You will lead the board in fulfilling the role of BGS, ensuring proper organisational governance and direction within the NERC and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) governance framework.

You will have an important role in ensuring the Executive Director of BGS achieves their and BGS’ objectives.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for:

  • proven track record of effective leadership within a complex operating environment and model
  • results-orientated, with a strong focus on achieving tangible outcomes and driving performance
  • previous experience serving on advisory boards, either as a member or chair
  • in-depth knowledge and experience in corporate governance best practices
  • ability to think and operate strategically and provide clear direction to guide organisational objectives
  • strong personal interest and previous experience working closely within the sectors of interest to BGS (government, private sector and academia)
  • a good understanding of BGS’s role in the UK geosciences sector including government requirements and initiatives
  • ability to support BGS in expanding and diversifying commercial opportunities and income streams
  • ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and potential customers
  • excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with diverse audiences

What you’ll be doing

You will be responsible for leading the board to:

  • sustain a world-class geological survey
  • maintain relationships with BGS partners
  • ensure proper governance and direction of BGS
  • enable the commercial diversification of BGS
  • support the BGS Director in meeting BGS’s strategic goals
