We are looking for people who have experience of research and interests relevant to health research funding to become Medical Research Council (MRC) expert reviewer selectors.

MRC expert reviewer selectors are responsible for identifying the most relevant experts that could review applications for funding submitted through MRC funding opportunities.

This is a flexible role and you can choose which MRC funding opportunities you work on and how many applications you are sent at any time. Expert reviewer selectors usually work with us remotely.

Applications from individuals currently on a career break or parental leave are welcome.

You should not apply to be an MRC expert reviewer selector if you are a current UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) employee or an active researcher.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for people who have experience of research and interests relevant to MRC’s remit to become expert reviewer selectors.

In MRC’s peer review process, applications for funding are assessed by expert reviewers. The experts we invite to review each application are identified by the MRC expert reviewer selectors.

We have a group of around 50 to 60 expert reviewer selectors working with us at any time and we have an open-ended opportunity to recruit new selectors.

Person requirements

You must have:

  • experience of research and demonstrable broad interest in biomedical research
  • knowledge of the peer review process
  • written and verbal communication skills
  • methodological approach to work
  • ability to work independently and to deadline
  • commitment to fully complete the reviewer selection process for each application assigned

We are interested in applications from anyone with expertise across a broad range of biomedical research and population health topics.

Currently we are particularly looking for selectors with expertise in the following areas:

  • computational biology and artificial intelligence
  • engineering biology
  • mechanistic, functional, and structural microbiology studies
  • translational and clinical research (including medical devices)
  • hepatic function and disease
  • metabolic disorders
  • gastroenterology
  • respiratory diseases
  • imaging, including brain imaging

This is a flexible role and applications from individuals currently on a career break or parental leave are welcome.

You should not apply to be an MRC expert reviewer selector if you are a current UKRI employee or an active researcher. This is to avoid potential conflicts of interest and ensure best use of expertise in the assessment of funding applications. Active researchers are expected to act as the expert reviewers in this process, not the reviewer selector.

You are not eligible to apply to be a reviewer selector if:

  • you apply or intend to apply as project lead, co-lead or fellow, either now or over the contracted term, for research funding from any of the UKRI research councils (AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC, STFC or Innovate UK)
  • you are a current member of any MRC boards, panels or overview groups, or any equivalent groups across UKRI that advise us on funding decisions

What you’ll be doing

MRC expert reviewer selectors are responsible for identifying the most relevant experts that could review applications for funding submitted through MRC funding opportunities.

We will send you applications and you will make your selections following our policies, processes and timeline for assessment. After you send us details of your selected reviewers MRC staff will invite reviewers and manage the peer review process through to a funding decision.

This is a flexible role and time commitment is dependent on your availability, the number of applications for funding we receive and how these applications match your expertise. You can choose which MRC funding opportunities you work on and how many applications you are sent at any time, usually between two and 30 applications.

You will be asked to provide a certain number of reviewer selections in the first instance and be available to provide additional reviewer selections as required, to obtain our target number of useable reviews for the application.

You will be asked to select a balance of expert reviewers to collectively assess all aspects of the application. This is particularly important for interdisciplinary applications. Considerations include selecting reviewers that can assess:

  • all research areas or disciplines in the proposed work
  • quality and importance of research vision
  • technical aspects of the application approach and project plan
  • capability of the applicant team to deliver
  • health impact and user need for the proposed work

UKRI is committed to embedding equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in everything that we do. Expert reviewer selectors have considerable influence on the assessment process by identifying a diverse range of suitable reviewers, especially from groups currently under-represented in the assessment process. Within your selections, we expect you to consider:

  • geographical diversity: international experts and experts from across the UK nations and institutions
  • organisational diversity: experts from a range of organisations and types of organisation
  • gender diversity: working towards MRC’s target for proportion of female reviewers invited
  • ethnicity: suggesting reviewers from under-represented groups

We will ask you to check that the reviewers you select do not have a conflict of interest with the application.

If your application to be an expert reviewer selector is successful you will be given training and guidance and have an initial paid trial period of three months. If you pass the trial, you will then be offered a contract for a year, renewable on an annual basis subject to satisfactory performance.

Expert reviewer selectors are not MRC employees.

This role is usually done remotely. You must have your own equipment, broadband access to the internet and be readily contactable.

Reviewer selectors will be paid for each application they are given responsibility for that is successfully reviewed:

  • £110 for a standard application
  • £145 for a more complex application

We pay you once sufficient reviews have been received to allow MRC to make a funding decision on the application.

How to apply

You can apply at any time by completing the online application survey on the UKRI Engagement Hub.

We only accept applications through the online application survey. We do not accept applications by email.

UK Research and Innovation is Disability Confident Committed. We will do our best to support any particular requirements to enable you to apply.

Contact us at rfpd@mrc.ukri.org if you would like to discuss any accessibility needs, require support completing the survey or need further information on the role.

How we’ll assess your application

Applications to be MRC expert reviewer selectors will be considered every four to six months. A selection panel of MRC staff will assess the applications against the person specification in the ‘Who we are looking for’ section and the expertise we currently require. The panel will decide which applicants will be invited to be become MRC expert reviewer selectors.
