2017 UK Radio Astronomy Strategic Review

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Balance of Programme (BoP1) exercise, published in 2017, identified the need for a review of UK radio astronomy to ensure that the strategic landscape in this research area was well-defined. This was especially timely given the current and potential future UK investments in:

  • e-MERLIN and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)
  • the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE)
  • the low frequency array radio telescope (LOFAR-UK)
  • the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

The Radio Astronomy Strategic Review Panel was set up in May 2017 to undertake this review. Following a series of meetings, attendance by panel members at relevant workshops, and a community questionnaire, the panel presented its report to the Science Board at the December 2017 meeting.
