Technology Department is a principal provider of technology and instrumentation for the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) programmes and facilities.
We deliver many large and complex scientific instruments, and provide multidisciplinary engineering and expertise in the organisation’s national and international collaborative programmes.
Motivated by the needs of the science community, we specialise in developing solutions where no suitable technology precedent exists. We achieve this through a balance of academic collaboration, commercial partnership and training, while working with academia to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Key facts
Technology Department has staff across two of STFC’s major sites:
- Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
- Daresbury Laboratory.
At these sites, we play a major role in particle physics, space programmes and accelerator development along with STFC’s major facilities, such as:
- ISIS
- Diamond Light Sources
- Central Laser Facility.
The department also maximises the impact of the developments and investment derived from STFC funding with external work for:
- other research councils
- government programmes
- the private sector
- research institutes
- universities
- facilities across the world.
Expertise
Technology’s expertise is of international calibre. We aim to be the partner of choice for the UK research community engaging in many of UK Research and Innovation’s high profile national and international programmes and facilities.
