The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has invested over £300 million in wheat research since 2000. Wheat is one of the world’s most vital crops, providing 20% of our calories. To meet global demand, we need to continue to improve production and yields, as well as mitigating pressures like climate change and emerging pests and diseases.
BBSRC has been a driving force behind ground-breaking wheat research and innovation, generating transformative tools, technologies, and resources, and supporting partnerships across academia, industry, and international borders.
This collection illustrates how BBSRC has provided sustained investment in wheat research, through key flagship programmes, providing important strategic leadership. Different types of outcomes and impacts are presented, along with case studies that span bioscience achievements across agriculture, health, and technology.
