NERC’s research centres provide leadership to the UK environmental science community and play an important role in international science collaborations.
The research centres host studentships, including survey studentships, within their specific study area.
NERC research centres
NERC supports six research centres that provide leadership to the UK science community within their science area.
The centres are provided with funding from NERC both directly, as an annual allocation, and through NERC research grants and external contracts.
They are also able to apply for NERC funding opportunities like any other eligible research organisations. The centres host studentships both alone and in conjunction with other research organisations.
Studentship funding
Research centres fund studentships using funding from different sources. The research focus of the studentships varies between centres.
Research centres host students within their institutions, as well as providing funding for research studentships within UK higher education institutions and research organisations. These include initiatives like the BGS University Funding Initiative (BUFI).
Training expectations are outlined in the Statement of Expectations for Doctoral Training.
Eligibility for studentships
Eligibility requirements vary, depending on the funding source of the studentships.
