UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) World Class Laboratories Funding helps research institutes and universities to maintain and improve facilities to ensure UK researchers and innovators have use of world class laboratories, equipment, and digital resources.

£1.7 billion for the financial year 2022 to 2023 and 2024 to 2025

Arts and Humanities Research Council, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Medical Research Council, Natural Environment Research Council, Science and Technology Facilities Council, Research England

The scope and what we're doing

UKRI’s World Class Laboratories Funding supports a wide range of research infrastructure including:

  • research equipment used by researchers across all disciplines
  • knowledge-based resources, such as scientific, cultural and artistic collections and physical and digital archives
  • health and safety equipment
  • maintenance of equipment and estates

The funding aims to ensure UK researchers and innovators have access to essential lab equipment, digital resources, and to improve and maintain current research facilities.

Funding is awarded by UKRI’s councils through a range of mechanisms including:

  • competitive equipment funding opportunities
  • strategic allocations to UKRI-supported institutions
  • supporting equipment costs on research grants
  • formula-driven allocations research organisations
