Bioenergy is a renewable form of energy generated from materials derived from biological sources. Bioenergy is recognised as having an important role in helping the UK to achieve its ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, as set out in the Climate Change Act (2008), potentially delivering 8% to 21% of UK energy needs.
As a core component of the bioeconomy, the deployment of bioenergy within the UK and the application of UK expertise globally has the potential to lead to job creation, economic growth, and enhance energy security.
BBSRC wishes to encourage research applications that enhance:
- the production of sustainable, drop-in, advanced biofuels – for aviation and shipping in particular
- the development of the biorefinery concept
- the development of biomass supply – enhancing the utilisation of wastes and residues, development of dedicated or multipurpose biomass crops.
Interdisciplinary approaches are particularly encouraged, and applications should consider the potential environmental and societal impacts of their work.
In all cases research applications must be targeted towards sustainable, advanced biofuels – second-generation and beyond. BBSRC does not wish to support research that focuses on the area of biomass combustion or combustion technologies.
