As a result of the reduction in the budget for Official Development Assistance (ODA), and a subsequent reduction in funding allocations, UKRI reviewed all ODA funding for financial year 2021 to 2022.
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s ODA allocation to UKRI significantly reduced its planned ODA expenditure for financial year 2021 to 2022. The £125 million budget allocation resulted in a £120 million gap between the allocation and planned commitments within the Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) and Newton Fund programmes.
This review explored the options to mitigate the impact of the reduced funding allocation on UKRI’s portfolio of GCRF and Newton grants.
It’s too early to detail the final impact of this review on individual grants funded by the GCRF, Newton Fund and other ODA funds within our councils, including Innovate UK, but we are working with our community to understand and capture the consequences.
