Area of investment and support: Self-driving vehicles challenge

Completed area of investment and support

This area is complete and will have no future activity.

We are investing £28 million through the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Challenge Fund to develop next-generation artificial intelligence and control systems for driverless cars.

Budget:
£28 million investment into 3 projects
Duration:
This was a single investment round for 3 projects that ran between 2017 and 2022
Partners involved:
Innovate UK, Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV)

The scope and what we're doing

Through the UKRI Challenge Fund we invested £28 million to develop next-generation artificial intelligence and control systems for self-driving cars.

Opportunities, support and resources available

There is no research funding available from the UKRI Challenge Fund for self-driving vehicles.

CCAV is an expert policy unit that is working with industry and academia to make everyday journeys safer, greener, more efficient and more inclusive. To do this, CCAV is shaping the safe and secure introduction of self-driving vehicles and services on UK roads and leading the government’s wider future of transport programme.

Past projects, outcomes and impact

The 3 projects funded under the challenge were:

DRIVEN, led by Oxbotica

Deployed a fleet of fully autonomous vehicles in urban and inter urban areas, culminating in autonomous journeys within London and Oxford.

No connected and autonomous vehicle trial at this level of complexity and integration had previously been attempted anywhere in the world.

StreetWise, led by FiveAI

Aimed to demonstrate the technology, safety validation methods, insurance and service models for delivering an autonomous personal mobility solution needed to replace the urban commuter car.

RoboPilot, led by Arrival

Developed and demonstrated autonomous driving functionality for an electric delivery van. This can then be adapted for future rollout of larger trucks and buses, bringing advanced autonomous technology to the light commercial vehicles market.

Demonstration of Society of Automotive Engineers level 4 autonomy over a 10-mile route on mixed public roads in all weathers, and of driverless self-parking.
