Area of investment and support

Area of investment and support: Energy

This programme is investing in world-leading research, training and innovation across the energy system. The aim is to increase scientific and industrial capability to ensure secure, safe and affordable energy while continuing to tackle climate change through the reduction of carbon emissions.

Partners involved:
Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

The scope and what we're doing

The UK has high levels of scientific and industrial capability in relation to energy systems, reflecting the legacy of North Sea development, decades of world-leading geological science exploration and leading deployment of offshore wind renewable energy.

NERC is committed to working with the academic research base, business, policymakers and the third sector to ensure its investments in research, skills and technologies in these sectors are translated for their maximum economic and societal impact.

This work will be of interest to oil and gas and offshore renewable energy companies and their supply chain, policymakers and regulators, environmental consultancies, and civil society.

Why we're doing it

Over the coming decades society faces a significant challenge to ensure a secure, safe and affordable energy mix while continuing to tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions. This will require a change in the way energy is generated and used across the globe.

In pursuing its remit, NERC invests in world-leading research, training and innovation across the energy system to provide society with evidence and expertise to inform decision-making.
