Peer review plays a crucial role in supporting UKRI to deliver its best research and innovation projects, ensuring responsible use of taxpayer money. In response to the findings of the 2023 Review of Peer Review, UKRI is working to enhance its peer review policies and processes by piloting innovative approaches and engaging with the research community. A special interest group will be created to share insights and foster improvements across UKRI, while maintaining a strong connection with the Metascience Unit. Additionally, the launch of a policy on the use of generative AI tools addresses the evolving nature of research and emphasizes the protection of applicants’ ideas.

UKRI is exploring innovative approaches in peer review to streamline and improve assessments, including for example partial randomisation. Building on its Simpler and Better Funding Programme, UKRI has introduced changes such as simplified applications, visible applicant guidance for reviewers, and easier management tools for reviewers. The commitment of expert reviewers remains essential to the success of the research and innovation system, and UKRI values their crucial contributions to its continued development.
