It is estimated that the MRC spends around 10 per cent of its translational budget on research into rare diseases . MRC researchers have played a significant role in identifying the genetic basis for many rare inherited diseases and have shown that studying rare diseases can often lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind more common conditions.
