Details

ESRC invests heavily in PhD studentships to cultivate the next generation of social scientists. Despite only funding a minority of UK social science PhDs, ESRC has considerable influence over the UK social science doctoral agenda. It has been more than ten years since ESRC last conducted a review of its doctoral training. During that time, demand for challenge-led, interdisciplinary research and evaluation, including the use of digital methods and ‘big data’ has increased. It is timely, therefore, to re-examine the social science doctoral offer, to identify its strengths as well as areas where it could be improved.
