The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) have identified several actions to increase diversity in environmental sciences. One action is ensuring that funding processes are not resulting in differential outcomes. As such, we have undertaken a first investigation of the UK Research and Innovation 2014 to 2020 dataset for NERC and to provide a baseline against which interventions to improve diversity might be measured.

This publication outlines our approach to this first investigation of the data and our findings. We have focused on gender and ethnicity (aggregated) as these are protected characteristics that may be inferred from a research proposal.
