Details
The data set covers:
- research councils
- Innovate UK
- Research England
- non UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) devolved administrations data.
There are three levels of sub-regions in the data set:
- ITL1
- ITL2
- ITL3.
ITL stands for International Territorial Levels and is the Office for National Statistics geocode standard for statistical geographies. The ITLs directly correspond to EU’s Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics (NUTS), used between 2003 and 2021.
The ITL1 level of this nomenclature splits the UK into the nine administrative regions of England, and the three devolved nations as labelled in the map.
Each region or devolved administration contains a population of between roughly two and nine million, and boundaries follow established electoral boundaries.
We publish this data once a year.
