The UK Research and Innovation Future Flight Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK and the Economic and Social Research Council, is driving innovation across the aviation ecosystem to position the UK as a global leader in advanced solutions.

This paper describes the current planning framework for drones and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) in the UK, with a focus on how drone and AAM use and their associated infrastructure would be assessed under the current planning system.

It also sets out a ‘looking forward position’ that:

  • draws on the conclusions of the research undertaken via the paper, including questionnaires with innovators active in the future flight sector
  • provides recommendations for the current UK planning system to address the policy gaps and other limitations that have been identified
