This guidance is for Medical Research Council (MRC) staff but is also relevant for some universities. It explains the policy on the supply of animals with the overall aim of avoiding the breeding, maintenance or culling of excess numbers of animals whilst meeting scientists’ reasonable expectations for a supply of appropriate animals.

It makes clear that the avoidable production of surplus animals that have no assigned use is not ethical or good scientific management practice.
