This framework highlights four key themes that the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) will use to support and enable a deeper, more integrated understanding of the determinants of health. The four key themes are:
- ageing and health across the life course
- food and nutrition for health
- combatting infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance
- transformative technologies for health
The framework is underpinned by two core principles that will be embedded within all research and innovation initiatives supported by BBSRC. They are:
- One Health: a unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals and the environment
- the 3Rs: a guiding framework for the replacement, reduction and refinement of animals used in research
