Professor Timothy Dafforn

Professor Timothy Dafforn is a member of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) Council.

Tim Dafforn is Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Birmingham. Tim began his career studying for a PhD in Protein Engineering at the University of Bristol before becoming a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research where he studied the influence of protease inhibitors in disease.

Tim was awarded an Medical Research Council Career Development Fellowship to continue his research at The University of Manchester before moving to the University of Birmingham as a member of faculty in 2003.

Since 2003, Tim has served terms as Head of the School of Biosciences and Director of Knowledge Exchange for the College of Life and Environmental Science at the University. Tim is also an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

Tim held the positions of Entrepreneur in Residence, Chief Scientific Advisor and then Chief Entrepreneurial advisor at the Department of Business Innovation and Skills in the UK government. He has also held positions on the UK Engineering Biology Leadership Council and the Ministry of Defence, Defence Science Expert Committee.

Tim is a Fellow and Trustee of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and has been a Member of Council and Trustee of the Biochemical Society. Tim’s research focuses on the exploiting biological molecules for industrial applications and has founded three businesses based on his innovations.
