Professor Tim Whitley

EPSRC Council member

Professor Timothy John Whitley OBE is a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Council.

As a BT Distinguished Engineer, Tim served as Managing Director of Research and Network Strategy for BT and Managing Director of BT’s research and development campus, Adastral Park, in Suffolk, England, until June 2023. In his 12-year career as Head of BT’s labs, he was accountable for all aspects of BT’s network research and innovation activities.

Tim joined BT at 16 as an apprentice telephone engineer. In his 42-year career, he held roles in:

  • optical fibre research
  • technology consultancy
  • technical architecture
  • strategic analysis

He also served as BT’s corporate strategy director.

In June 2023 Tim was appointed OBE for services to communications technologies and scientific policy.

In 2018 Tim was admitted to Pembroke College Cambridge serving as BT William Pitt Fellow until March 2024.

Tim is a:

  • Visiting Professor with the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department of the University of Essex
  • Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology
  • Fellow of the Institute of Telecoms Professionals

He also holds an honorary doctor of science from the University of East Anglia.
