Poli Stuart-Lacey

Chief of External Affairs and Communications

Poli is UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Chief of External Affairs and Communications, joining the organisation in July 2024.

Poli leads the External Affairs and Communications function within the organisation and acts as Head of Profession across the whole of UKRI on external and internal communication issues. Poli is a member of the Executive Committee, reporting to the Chief Executive.

Poli brings a wealth of experience from her career as a senior leader in government communications. She worked across several high-profile policy departments, including as Director of Communications at HM Revenue and Customs (2017 to 2021) and Head of Communications at Cabinet Office (2015 to 2017).

Poli was appointed as Chief of Communications and Engagement at the Met Police from 2021 to 2023, overseeing the change in Commissioner and leading communications for the organisation through a time of reputational crisis. Before joining UKRI, Poli returned to government as interim Director of Communications for the Wales Office, ahead of the general election.

As well as a passion for connecting with diverse audiences through excellent communication and engagement, Poli has a deep interest in organisational cultures and values, and in how organisations are perceived by external audiences. Poli is an experienced leader guiding organisations through major change, and through significant political and societal events.
