NERC Council member
Professor Peter Liss CBE FRS is a member of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Council.
Peter is Emeritus Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. He works on biogeochemical interactions between the oceans and the atmosphere, in particular air-sea gas exchange and its role in atmospheric chemistry and global element cycling.
He has been chair of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme and subsequently chaired its Surface Ocean, Lower Atmosphere project.
Peter was Interim Executive Director of the International Science Council (ICSU now ISC) in Paris 2014 to 2015 and served as a member of the Executive Group of the ‘Future Earth’ Task Team.
In the UK he was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, President of the Challenger Society, chaired the Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science and co-founded the Royal Society’s Global Environmental Research Committee.
He currently chairs the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network and the Underwater Sound Forum and is a member of the Advisory Council of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.
Peter received the Plymouth Marine Sciences medal and the John Jeyes medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, in addition he is Distinguished Professor at the Ocean University of Qingdao and Adjunct Professor at Texas A & M University.
He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, a member of Academia Europaea and was the first Honorary Fellow of the UK National Oceanography Centre. In 2008 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded a CBE for services to science.
