BBSRC Chief Operating Officer
Laura Dance became the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s (BBSRC) Chief Operating Officer on 3 March 2025.
Before joining BBSRC, Laura served as Director of Corporate Services at the British Antarctic Survey. Over six years, she was part of a leadership team responsible for driving an ambitious mission to conduct multidisciplinary research in the polar regions.
Laura’s career is distinguished by high-impact roles across UK central government, including key appointments at the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and the Department of Health and Social Care. With expertise in resource stewardship, public policy and organisational leadership, she brings valuable strategic insight to BBSRC’s Executive Leadership Team.
Alongside her role at BBSRC, Laura serves as a Trustee for the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation. SAMS plays a crucial role in advancing marine science for a productive and sustainably managed marine environment through pioneering research, education and public engagement.
Laura’s deep-rooted experience in research organisations, combined with her leadership in complex environments, strengthens BBSRC’s ability to deliver on its strategic ambitions.
Outside of work, Laura enjoys an active and fulfilling life. A licensed umpire for British Rowing, she regularly volunteers at regattas. When she finds time for a quieter moment, you’ll likely find her at her allotment, sometimes digging, sometimes just contemplating.
