Professor Dame Julia Buckingham

Research England Council member

Professor Dame Julia Buckingham DBE, CBE, FMedSci is a member of Research England’s Council.

She was Vice-Chancellor and President of Brunel University London from 2012 to 2021 and President of Universities UK from 2019 to 2021.

Professor Buckingham is currently Chair of the Institute of Cancer Research and of the NC3Rs.

She is also:

  • an independent member of Council and Trustee at the University of Surrey
  • an advisor to FutureLearn Ltd
  • a member of the External Advisory Board to the University of Exeter Cornwall

She was:

  • appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to biology and education in 2018
  • elected to a Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2019
  • appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) for services to higher education in 2025
