STFC Council member
Professor Dave Charlton is a member of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Council.
Professor Charlton is Poynting Professor of Physics at the University of Birmingham, and has been with Birmingham since 1994, spending extended periods at the CERN laboratory.
Dave has worked on a series of high-energy collider experiments, ranging from UA1 at the SPS proton-antiproton collider, via OPAL at the large electron-positron collider, LEP, to ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. His research includes probing the breaking of the electroweak symmetry, as well as in trigger system construction and operation.
Dave was Head Spokesperson of the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN from 2013 to 2017, following a period as Deputy Spokesperson including the time of the Higgs boson discovery. Earlier he had been ATLAS Physics Coordinator, a position he also held at OPAL.
Dave has previously served on numerous review panels and committees. In the UK these include chairing the Particle Physics Grants Panel (2004 to 2007), and membership of STFC Science Board (2022 to 2024). Internationally they include panels in Europe and the US.
Dave is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Institute of Physics, and was awarded the Richard Glazebrook Medal and Prize in 2017.
