The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) is based at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh.
As well as being an historic site, the Royal Observatory Edinburgh is a working observatory which houses nearly 140 staff and students.
Engineers at the UK ATC design extremely sensitive cameras and other instruments for many of the world’s best telescopes and for the big telescopes of the future. They are also finding innovative ways of using this technological expertise in fields outside of astronomy, including earth observation and medicine.
Our public engagement programmes include:
- Astronomy Talks: talks from engineers and astronomers working in Edinburgh and on exciting projects worldwide
- meteorite loans to primary and secondary schools across Scotland and community partnerships across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
National campaigns, such as the work around the James Webb Space Telescope, further engage schools and communities across the UK with STFC’s inspirational science and technology.
