Who can apply

Before applying for funding, check the Eligibility of your organisation.

For full details, visit Eligibility as an individual.

Who is eligible to apply

To be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity you must:

  • you must be employed by an eligible research organisation
  • hold a current award with an eligible funder or alternatively, you must have held an eligible award that has ended within the last two years, with an award end date not before 31 August 2021

Eligible exchange researchers

Exchange researchers may include:

  • graduate students
  • postdoctoral fellows
  • research assistants or research associates
  • newly independent investigators (within five years of their first independent academic research appointment).

Newly independent investigators can apply as both the exchange researcher and the named principal investigator.

Applications between two labs that were previously funded for an exchange will be accepted; however, the project summary must include a justification for the second exchange and how it will strengthen the ongoing collaborative activities.

An exchange researcher (also known as exchange scientist), is not eligible to participate in the program if they have also participated in this exchange program in the previous year.

If a large volume of applications is received, Stem Cell Network and MRC may choose to prioritise those applications from principal investigators who have not previously been supported to maximise the distribution of funding.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We are committed to achieving equality of opportunity for all funding applicants. We encourage applications from a diverse range of researchers.

We support people to work in a way that suits their personal circumstances. This includes:

  • career breaks
  • support for people with caring responsibilities
  • flexible working
  • alternative working patterns

What we're looking for

Funding is available to support the travel of researchers from the UK to Canada, or from Canada to the UK.

All applications claiming UK costs, including bidirectional applications, must be submitted through the Joint Electronic Submission system (Je-S)

All applications claiming only Canadian costs must be submitted directly to Stem Cell Network (SCN).

The purpose of the UK-Canada Exchange Programme Awards is primarily to:

  • provide new skills to researchers, including:
    • MSc or PhD students
    • postdoctoral fellows
    • research associates
    • technicians
    • newly independent investigators
  • build new links between UK and Canada-based scientists.

The awards will add value to research taking place in both countries by facilitating closer collaboration.

Exchanges should be relevant to regenerative medicine, defined as the branch of medicine that develops methods to regrow, repair or replace damaged or diseased cells, organs or tissues.

Regenerative medicine includes:

  • the generation and use of therapeutic stem cells
  • tissue engineering
  • the production of artificial organs

Research applications focused on cancer must be regenerative in nature, or use stem cells for addressing the proposed problem, or both. Interdisciplinary projects with relevance to regenerative medicine are welcomed.

The project that is the focus of the exchange must have been previously peer-reviewed and funded by a granting organisation or agency either:

  • in Canada, for example:
    • the Canadian Institutes of Health and Research (CIHR)
    • National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
    • Stem Cell Network (SCN)
  • in the UK, including, but not limited to:
    • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), such as Medical Research Council (MRC)
    • Wellcome
    • medical research charities

The award must be current or have ended within the last two years, such as, projects with an award end date not before 31 August 2021.

Each proposal must have the support of one Canadian principal investigator and one UK principal investigator. Their labs can act as host or visitor, or both.

With this funding opportunity, SCN and MRC will support the travel of Canadian and UK researchers at $15,000 CAD or £9,500 GBP per researcher.

Your proposal can be for either:

  • two researchers to travel between one another’s labs (bidirectional)
  • one researcher to travel to the other researcher’s lab (unidirectional)

Bidirectional exchanges are encouraged and preferred.

Exchanges are expected to be six to 12 weeks in length and are expected to begin by 15 March 2024.

The host and exchange researcher are responsible for ensuring they obtain permission from the host institution (including all relevant training, for example health and safety) for:

  • the exchange researcher to access institutional facilities associated with the host laboratory
  • following all institutional rules and guidelines for the duration of the exchange

Arrangements should be made for facilities access in advance of the exchange, wherever possible.

You are advised to familiarise yourself with necessary visa requirements for the travelling researchers as early as possible to avoid delays to the visits should your application be successful.

What we will fund

Funding is available to support the following collaborative activities:

  • travel for researchers in either direction, including transportation and meal costs while travelling
  • accommodation costs for the duration of the exchange
  • visits or access to facilities
  • conference attendance, subject to approval by SCN or MRC
  • other collaborative activities may be supported on a case-by-case basis

Funding will be delivered to participating Canadian institutions from SCN and to participating UK institutions from MRC. We will fund direct costs at 100% of the full economic cost of the exchange.

Please note, you should only be claiming eligible costs related to the UK applicant within the Je-S resource sections ‘travel and subsistence’ and ‘other directly incurred costs’. The UK applicant is permitted to claim costs up to a maximum of £9,500 (funded at 100%).

What we will not fund

Exchange awards are not a vehicle for supporting research projects and cannot be used to fund:

  • salary costs
  • items of equipment
  • other research costs, including consumables
  • ordinary living costs, for example meals

Exchange personnel will be responsible for finding and securing their own suitable accommodations for the duration of the exchange. SCN or MRC will support eligible accommodation costs.

How to apply

You must apply using the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) system.

You can find advice on completing your application further below. We recommend you start your application early.

Your host organisation will also be able to provide advice and guidance.

Submitting your application

Before starting an application, you will need to log in or create an account in Je-S.

All UK investigators involved in the project need to be registered on Je-S

Canadian investigators are not required to be included within the investigators section of the Je-S form and therefore do not require Je-S accounts.

Any UK investigators who do not have a Je-S account must create an account that permits them to be included within the Je-S application as either principal or co-investigator. Those without Je-S accounts, must create the correct Je-S account at least 10 working days before the funding opportunity deadline.

When applying:

  1. Select ‘documents’, then ‘new document’.
  2. Select ‘call search’.
  3. To find the funding opportunity, search for:  UK and Canada regenerative medicine exchange programme.

This will populate:

  • council: MRC
  • document type: Standard proposal
  • scheme: Research grant
  • call/type/mode: UK and Canada regenerative medicine exchange programme

When you have completed your application, make sure you ‘submit document’ and contact your research office to ensure your application is finally submitted through Je-S to us before the advertised funding opportunity closes.

You can save completed details in Je-S at any time and return to continue your application later.

Deadline

We must receive your Je-S application by 31 October 2023 at 4:00pm UK time.

You will not be able to apply after this time. Please leave enough time for your proposal to pass through your organisation’s Je-S submission route before this date.

You should ensure you are aware of and follow any internal institutional deadlines that may be in place.

You will not be able to submit your Je-S application until the funding opportunity opens in Je-S on 18 September 2023.

By submitting your application by Je-S, you grant us permission to share your full application with Stem Cell Network (SCN) Canada.
