The BBSRC-STFC Biotechnology Business Incubation Centre (BioBIC) is an incubator programme for early-stage biotechnology start-ups based at Sci-Tech Daresbury in the Liverpool City Region.

You must:

  • be a UK-registered company under five years old that is majority-owned by founders and employees
  • have received previous support from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) or a UKRI partner organisation

BioBIC provides:

  • £50,000 of research and development (R&D) funding
  • £10,000 innovation voucher for R&D activity
  • technical, commercial and intellectual property support

Who can apply

BioBIC is open to UK-registered companies under five years old that are majority-owned by founders and employees and that have one or more of the following:

  • received a BBSRC or other UKRI grant to support the research underpinning the product or service
  • received an Innovate UK or other UKRI commercialisation support grant to take forward a bioscience innovation to address any market opportunity
  • received accelerator or pre-incubation support from a UKRI partner organisation

The research underpinning the products or services being carried forward by the company must be within BBSRC remit.

What we're looking for

The research underpinning the products or services being carried forward by the research team must be building on a previous BBSRC or other UKRI grant or UKRI partner support. The research must be taking forward a bioscience innovation to address any market opportunity.

The technology must be either:

  • biological in nature
  • interact with a biological entity
  • involve a biological process
  • address a biological challenge

We will not accept applications based on medical or clinical devices and therapeutics being developed solely for a specific end-point clinical utility (including diagnostics).

The deadline to submit your expression of interest is 28 July 2024, 11:59pm UK time.

How we will assess your application

All applications will go through a competitive selection process.

Expressions of interest are limited to one per company.

Submissions will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Once submitted, companies will be notified if they have been successfully shortlisted to submit a full application within two weeks of submission and by 8 September 2024 at the latest.
