Funding for short courses and summer schools: 2023 to 2024

Apply for funding to hold short courses, summer schools and online training resources in science or technology.

You must be from an STFC-accredited UK university or research organisation eligible for STFC funding.

Your short course, summer school or online training resource must:

  • be aimed primarily at STFC-funded PhD students
  • cover core research activity supported by the STFC studentships programme

EPSRC postdoctoral fellowship, May 2023

You must have either:

  • a PhD
  • at least four years’ experience in a relevant field by the start of your fellowship

Candidates with more research experience may prefer to apply for the open fellowship or open plus fellowship.

Your fellowship can be up to three years long and may be held part-time.

This early career opportunity is only open in selected research areas.

You must be hosted and supported by an eligible UK research organisation during your fellowship.

STFC: Industrial CASE and CASE plus studentship

Apply for funding for a PhD student at your organisation in collaboration with an industry-based project at a non-academic organisation.

The project must fall within the STFC core remits:

  • astronomy
  • solar and planetary science
  • particle physics
  • particle astrophysics and cosmology
  • nuclear physics
  • accelerator science.

Sandpit: novel sensing for UK defence and security

Apply to attend a five-day interactive interdisciplinary sandpit to develop projects on novel sensing for UK defence and security applications.

Participants will attend all five days of the sandpit in-person plus a virtual pre-meeting the preceding week.

Modelling UK supply chains as complex systems for resilience

Apply for funding for a Network Plus to model UK supply chains as complex systems to strengthen resilience.

One 4-year interdisciplinary Network Plus will be funded by UKRI (£6,250,000; UKRI will fund £5,000,000 at 80% FEC)

The network can be led by any discipline in collaboration with government, business and the third sector.

Expression of interest: astronomy large awards

Provide an expression of interest for astronomy large award funding. Large awards support themed, programmatic large projects tackling big research questions or technology development with the potential to produce world-leading research. Your programme must fall within the STFC astronomy remit.

You must be:

  • employed by an eligible UK research organisation
  • eligible to apply as an applicant (project lead or co-lead)

Public engagement Spark Awards 2023 round 2

Apply for funds to engage the public with STFC-supported science, technology or facilities.

We’d particularly like to fund projects that engage:

  • eight to 14-year-olds, and their families, from socioeconomically deprived areas
    groups considered to have low science capital.
  • The cost of your project can be up to £15,000
  • projects can last up to 36 months

T-AP funding opportunity on democracy, governance and trust

Apply for funding to deepen and widen our knowledge and understanding of opportunities, challenges, and crises relevant to democracy, governance and trust.

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for UKRI funding.

Realising the health co-benefits of the transition to net zero

Apply for funding to lead a transdisciplinary research hub towards realising the health co-benefits of the UK transition to net zero.

You must:

  • be based at a research organisation eligible for UK Research and Innovation funding
  • meet individual eligibility requirements

The total fund is up to £30 million across five years to fund challenge-led hubs.

Nucleus Awards 2024 Stage 1

Apply for funding to engage the public with Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) supported science, technology or facilities.

You must work for an organisation that:

  • is based in the UK
  • has audited accounts

Proposals must include a subject matter expert in an STFC-funded area.
