We allocate funding to higher education providers (HEPs) in England to support research and knowledge exchange activities.
We calculate this funding using formulae. We sometimes refer to these funds as formula-based funds.
You do not apply for formula-based funding.
Our main formula-based funds are recurrent, which means they reoccur every year and do not tend to change much.
Our recurrent funding includes:
- Quality-Related Research (QR) funding, informed by the outcomes of the Research Excellence Framework (REF)
- the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF)
- the Research Capital Investment Fund (RCIF)
We also allocate non-recurrent formula-based funds, which are time limited and which we confirm through our publications and circular letters.
In all cases your HEP must comply with Research England’s terms and conditions. If there are further requirements you need to meet, we will let you know.
See Research England: how we fund higher education providers for more information on each of our formula-based funds, and how this type of funding works.
