We calculate formula-based funding for higher education providers (HEPs) annually.
Our calculations may include:
- the number of eligible academic staff at your HEP
- the amount and quality of research done
- the amount of research and knowledge exchange income your provider received
We allocate funding on the basis of past quality and performance, taking into account:
- the results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF)
- data from the Office for Students Annual Financial Returns
- higher education staff data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA)
- higher education student data from HESA
- data from the Higher Education Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey
- data on knowledge transfer partnerships from Innovate UK
For more detailed information on how we calculate each of our formula-based funds, see Research England: how we fund higher education providers.
We will contact your HEP about how much formula-based funding your organisation will receive in each academic year (1 August to 31 July).
