NERC fellowships

There are two main fellowships funded by NERC, as well as others funded jointly or by multiple councils. You must apply through the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) system.

Independent research fellowships

Open to early career researchers with a PhD who want to conduct their own environmental research within an eligible host organisation.

Strong applicants will demonstrate convincing evidence of working towards this goal and a high potential to become independent research leaders in the future.

Application dates for independent research fellowships

There is one funding opportunity per year. The next independent research fellowship funding opportunity will open on 9 January 2025 and close on 3 April 2025.

Applicants that require NERC British Antarctic Survey (BAS) support, must complete a pre-award operational support planning questionnaire (OSPQ) on the BAS website and email the Antarctic Access Office (email: afibas@bas.ac.uk) stating their:

  • name
  • institution
  • project title

The deadline for pre-award OSPQs to be submitted is 3 January 2025.

Sift panels will be held in July 2025, after which, successful applicants will be invited for interview in September 2025.
