New developments in medicine and biology raise important ethical issues. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics was established in 1991 by the trustees of the Nuffield Foundation to identify, examine and report on the ethical questions raised by advances in biological and medical research.
Since 1994, it has been funded jointly by the Nuffield Foundation, MRC and the Wellcome Trust.
Nuffield Council’s membership includes clinicians, educators, lawyers, nurses, philosophers, scientists and theologians. It has achieved an international reputation, providing advice that assists policymaking, addresses public concerns and stimulates debate in bioethics.
For more information on membership, terms of reference and the topics that it has investigated, see the Nuffield Council on Bioethics website.
