MRC-funded fellowships

These include funding opportunities for both non-clinical and clinically active researchers.

Clinical research training fellowships (CRTF)

Provides funding for registered healthcare professionals to undertake a PhD or to reacquire research skills.

There are three opportunities to apply each year, with closing dates in January, April and September.

Find out more on the UKRI funding finder, including assessment criteria and how to apply.

Clinician scientist fellowship (CSF)

Provides funding for registered healthcare professionals to establish themselves as independent investigators.

There are three opportunities to apply each year, with closing dates in January, April and September.

Find out more on the UKRI funding finder, including assessment criteria and how to apply.

Senior clinical fellowship (SCF)

Provides funding for registered healthcare professionals to become internationally-recognised leaders in their field.

Following a consultation process, we are discontinuing future MRC-funded senior fellowships as part of our prioritisation of support for earlier career transitions. All ongoing awards or submitted applications being assessed will continue as planned.

Alongside the development of MRC’s new training and careers strategy, we are working with colleagues in UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to provide a clear and coherent fellowships offer.

This assumes on-going funding for the Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF) which supports those looking to establish themselves as leaders in new fields or ways of working. FLF is open to, and has successfully supported, clinical and non-clinical applicants within MRC’s community who are establishing their leadership.

We are also working with other funders to create a UK national clinical research career pathway.

Career development award (CDA)

Supports postdoctoral researchers to make the transition to independent researcher by developing leadership in their own specialist area of research and establishing their own research team.

There are two opportunities to apply each year, with closing dates in April and September.

Find out more on the UKRI funding finder, including assessment criteria and how to apply.

Senior non-clinical fellowship (SNCF)

Helps a researcher with a track record of leading their own independent research to become an internationally-recognised leader in their field.
