Mentoring programmes are a key mechanism through which research organisations can support the professional development of their staff, particularly postdoctoral researchers and newly appointed principal investigators.
There is increasing recognition that taking part in such programmes brings a range of great benefits to both mentees and mentors. However, there is also an awareness that the access these staff have to such programmes is variable.
We have reviewed mentoring practices across a range of sectors from business to academia, and have identified key elements of best practice for the mentoring of postdoctoral researchers and new principal investigators in academia.
Going forward this review will be used to guide BBSRC’s future activities in this important area.
