This strategy was led and authored by Professor Jane Langdale CBE FRS, University of Oxford, with extensive consultation with members of the research and innovation community, and was discussed by BBSRC Council in September 2020.
Plants supply the food, energy and materials needed for people to enjoy healthy and prosperous lives across the globe. Plants also enhance the quality of our natural environment and support our world’s ecosystems.
Research and innovation involving plants is crucial if we are to tackle a range of global challenges, such as:
- reaching net zero to mitigate the effects of climate change
- ensuring a sustainable and secure agri-food supply
- protecting biodiversity and enhancing our environment
- addressing health and wellbeing issues within our populations.
Next steps
UKRI is facilitating the dissemination of the strategy as part of our stewardship role within the R&D system in helping support the UK’s diverse research and innovation communities.
