Detectors and instrumentation are critical technology elements needed to support the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) core science programmes and the national and international facilities used by UK researchers and industry. In 2018, STFC commissioned a detectors and instrumentation strategic review to explore the drivers and opportunities for future detector requirements.
STFC published a 2021 detectors and instrumentation strategy that builds on the findings of the 2018 review. The strategy identifies a framework for STFC to work with its national laboratories and the science communities to prioritise future detector developments and strengthen the necessary specialist skills base.
The strategy will help enable STFC to respond to the detection needs of future research infrastructures and science programmes, including the findings of the European Committee for Future Accelerators Detector R&D Roadmap.
