MRC Human Genetics Unit

The mission of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Human Genetics Unit at the University of Edinburgh (MRC HGU) is to explore the mechanisms underlying human genetic disease and normal development and physiology. The Unit’s research seeks to identify the genetic risk factors in common disease in isolated populations, develop animal model systems to study human genetic disease and mammalian development, understand the role of nuclear and cytoplasmic organisation in regulating the flow of information from DNA to the organism, and investigate opportunities for novel therapeutic approaches including stem cell therapy. The HGU works alongside the University of Edinburgh Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine (CGEM) and the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre (ECRC) under the overarching vision of the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh.
